MTF: An acronym meaning “male-to-female.” The acronym is used most often in the context of the experience of those who identify as women but were assigned male at birth (AMAB).

FTM: An acronym meaning “female-to-male.” The acronym is used most often in the context of the experience of those who identify as men but were assigned female at birth (AFAB).

AMAB and AFAB seem to be more commonly used over the past few years. They can be more accurate in many instances, including but not limited to health and medical situations where often times we’re considering people who were born with a vagina or penis.

AMAB and AFAB might also be favored over MTF and FTM because the person identifies how they identify, they aren’t “changing” in that sense; they were always male or female
