Director of Research Dr. D J Williams, along with Executive Director Emily Prior and Research Affiliate Dr. Candace Christensen recently published “Do we always practice what we preach? Real vampires’ fears of coming out of the coffin to social work and helping professionals” in the peer reviewed Critical Social Work journal.
Using poetic narrative, the authors outline how people who identify as real vampires feel about the possible implications of revealing their identities to social workers and others. Williams, Prior, and Christensen caution social workers to be aware of cultural competency, work towards advocating for minority groups, and be careful of harmful stereotypes based on myth when working with these specialized clients.
